History: Golf Anyone?

If you haven’t been out to our golf course lately, it might be worth your while to go and experience our wonderful city-owned asset.  Although we are experiencing drought conditions, the ground crew has maximized the use of well water to keep the course in playable condition.  Something wonderful happened out at the course recently.  Not a hole-in-one, or even an eagle, but a life-or-death medical situation.  It seems that a gentleman golfer was finishing up on the 16th green when he began to experience severe chest pains.  A call was made from one of the golfers to the clubhouse regarding the situation.  Jeff Regalado, received the call and turned it over to Wes Skaggs, our golf pro.  Jeff called 911, Wes grabbed the on-site defibrillator (the “AED”).  Wes arrived in less than 2 minutes at the scene and although adrenalin was flowing through Wes, he knew exactly what to do.  You see, Grant Collins, our golf course director, some time ago had implemented emergency response training with all of his staff as required by our city manager.  When Wes arrived at the scene, he took control of the dire situation.  He laid the gentleman, who was now blue and without pulse in the proper position.  Wes then attached the AED to the gentleman.  The AED produced a readout which indicated that resuscitation was necessary.  Wes cleared everyone away from the subject and initiated an electric pulse to the gentleman.  The Leander Fire Department and EMS were on the way, and a pulse as well as color had been restored.  Wes Skaggs, your golf pro, had just saved a man’s life!  Fire Chief Bill Gardner arrived and confirmed that the gentleman was alive and breathing.  The emergency personnel prepped the gentleman and transported him to the hospital and is now in recovery.  Now I know if I had just gone through what Wes Skaggs had gone through, I would probably have to go home and lie down.  Wes; well he made it back to the clubhouse just in time for his 1:00 p.m. teaching lesson!  What a Pro!
In a game where par and under par are often sought, it is nice to know that Wes Skaggs made it where this gentleman will live to play another round.
As Mayor, I want to personally thank Wes and the entire golf course staff for such a quick and very meaningful response.  Not only do we appreciate what you do to make our golf course better, but we appreciate you going above and beyond what your duty calls for.    I think I will take a lesson from Wes, how about you?
